March Wrap-Up

I can't believe it's already the end of March. The year is flying by! We've been busy in second grade.
For Ella's STAR of the Week, her mom came in and taught us a little bit about architecture. The kids got to design their own house!
On St. Patrick's Day an Irish dancing school came to perform for us. It was really neat!

Ella and her mom reading us a book for her STAR of the week. Her grandparents also came!

We've also been working on adjectives. Below the kids are thinking of an object and writing adjectives to describe them for their partners to guess.

 Happy birthday, Brick!

For Chloe's STAR of the Week, her mom came in and talked to us about genetics.
We created DNA double helix strands out of candy. So cool!

 We also played genetics bingo!
 Happy birthday, Nico!

Moving onto March

We had a very busy week! We celebrated Mardi Gras with John's mom who brought us some beads and King cake and taught us the history of Mardi Gras. It was so interesting! We also have been hard at work on mental math with Mr. Barrett. He's been teaching us some strategies to help make math easier and quicker for us. We also have been learning about matter and textures of matter. We were scientists and classified Chex Mix based on different textures. The kids really enjoyed it. We've also been working on contractions - the kids made caterpillar contractions.

Using our base 10 blocks for mental math.

He also brought in his dad to read us a story.

Valentine's Week

We had our Valentine's day party on Friday. A big thanks to the moms for putting it together! My mom and sister got to come too which was fun :) We decorated Valentine's bags and ate some yummy treats.

We also have been working on measurement this week.
Here we were using estimation and measuring in meters.

In these next few photos we were measuring in centimeters.

Juan Pablo was also our STAR of the Week. Thanks for sharing!

Paramedics

This past week, Meghan was our STAR of the week. She brought her mom and sister in to read a book. Then later in the week her aunt and uncle came in. Her aunt works on an emergency rescue helicopter and her husband works on an ambulance. They brought the ambulance, which the kids go to go into, they turned on the siren. It was really neat! The answered lots of questions and let the kids try on some of the gear too.

End of January

We started the IOWA test this past week, which are not very fun for anyone. The kids work really hard during the testing so we tried to do some more fun, hands-on activities for them.

We discussed bar graphs, so I let the kids vote on whether they thought I was going to have a boy or girl. Clearly, boy was the winner. We shall see come June :)
The kids also got to poll their classmates and graph right handed writers verses left hand.

It was also Andrew's Birthday this past week.
Will was our STAR of the week. He brought in Bronco doughnuts for us (we're ready for a Super Bowl win!)
He also brought in his dad who taught us all about tape and the many uses for it. It was very informative!
